Relax, take a deep breath and reread their single profile to find something that
is of mutual interest! People are most interested in talking about themselves
and their profile is loaded with their likes and dislikes.
Their profile indicates they like camping. Great subject line: Hi I see you like
camping. Quote back what they said, if it was “I like camping” don’t respond
with I see you are a camping enthusiast. There is a tremendous difference
between the two.
In the message section:
Ask questions and talk about their single most favorite subject, themselves!
Follow up with questions like:
What type of camping do you like?
How often do you go camping?
What is your most favorite time of year to camp?
Provide a paragraph or two about your own camping experiences and preferences.
And indicate a few other common interests that you may have.
The first email is a way to learn if you have enough in common to continue or
even begin to correspond. Keep it simple; emphasize what you have in common and
keep it positive.
To avoid miss-spelling write a draft of your first email in Microsoft word or
any program that will allow you to spell check what you have written.
Email is a cold electronic medium; your reader can’t see your face, read your
body language or hear your tone of voice. Take time to think about what you want
to write, write it, reread and rewrite it.
